Why Isn't LinkedIn Easier to Use

Recently I have been traveling and while I normally keep logged in to LinkedIn all the time, I somehow logged out. When I returned to the United States I tried …to log in. The system said that it needed to send me a verification code to my phone number ending in “37” however my phone number does not end in “37,” it ends in “67” therefore I never received the code.
Fortunately, LinkedIn has a solution. Instead of getting a code on my phone, I can use a service that uses facial recognition to verify my ID. I scanned the QR code provided by LinkedIn, went through the facial recognition process as required, including allowing the system to take my picture and uploading my driver’s license. At the end, the system indicated that I was verified, and that the system would share that information with LinkedIn. A screen then appeared that showed the Log in page.
Assuming that my identity had been verified, I then entered my email address and password and tried to sign in again. The LinkedIn system then went right back to wanting to send a verification code to the incorrect phone number. So, I went through the facial recognition process again. Exactly the same thing happened.Show More

A friend of mine sent me an article by Thom Hartmann that was published on a website named Alternet.org. The article was titled “Americans are doubling down on the thing …that hurts them the most” and was published on January 8, 2025. For those of you who are not familiar with Thom Hartmann or Alternet.org, let me explain.
Alternet.org is a left leaning online news publication platform that describes itself as supporting “independent journalism and the delivery of honest, accurate news.”
Thom Hartmann is an American radio personality, author, businessman, and progressive political commentator. Hartmann has been hosting a nationally syndicated radio show, The Thom Hartmann Program, since 2003 and hosted a nightly television show, The Big Picture, between 2010 and 2017.Show More

In 1912 the Qing Dynasty that had ruled China for some 268 years came to an end. The Xinhai Revolution ended China’s last imperial dynasty and established the Republic of …China. However, that doesn’t mean China settled easily into a new system of government, and by 1927 China was officially in a civil war, with the Nationalists, or Kuomintang on one side, and the Communists on the other side.
When the Japanese invaded China the two sides took a breather and stopped fighting each other, turning their efforts towards fighting the Japanese. However, while the Nationalists engaged the Japanese on numerous fronts, the Communists sat back and stockpiled weapons (most being supplied by the United States) so that they could be used against the Nationalists once the war ended.
The war did end, and the better equipped Communists chased the Nationalists out of mainland China onto the island of Formosa, where they formed the democratic capitalist country of Taiwan.

Why Do High Tax Champions Hate Tariffs
President Trump is using tariffs as a negotiating tool with foreign …
President Trump is using tariffs as a negotiating tool with foreign countries to get thing that he believes are in the best interest of the United States. Some people support …the idea of raising tariffs. However, many people are against tariffs and that includes some Trump supporters. In my conversations with friends and colleagues, and in reading articles in the news, it is apparent to me that while everyone knows the term, a lot of people don’t understand tariffs and how they work. In this article I hope, if nothing else, to educate my readers on tariffs and how they work.
Tariffs are one of the earliest forms of taxation. The word “tariff” originates from the Italian word tariffa, which means a list of prices or a table of duties. This, in turn, comes from the Medieval Latin tariffa, which was derived from the Arabic word ta‘rīfah, meaning “notification” or “inventory of fees.” The Arabic term is related to the verb ‘arrafa, meaning “to inform” or “to define.” The word entered European languages through trade and commerce, particularly during the Middle Ages, when Mediterranean trade between Arab and European merchants was thriving.
Historically tariffs were an easy tax to calculate and collect. When a ship arrived in a harbor, it was easy to take an inventory of the products unloaded from the ship, and then to assess a tax on those products. Likewise, it was easy to monitor products coming into a region by caravan or wagon train. The systems and processes needed to collect modern-day taxes, such as income tax, sales tax, and excise tax, simply did not exist. As a result, for centuries governments have funded themselves through tariffs (and of course a little pillaging of their neighboring towns or countries).Show More

Should We Worry About Government Waste and Fraud
I am trying to understand the outrage by Democrats and people on the …
I am trying to understand the outrage by Democrats and people on the left over the attempts of Trump, Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce government …spending and in particular government waste and fraud. I have a good friend who tends to be on the left and I have been discussing this issue with him. I have quoted his viewpoint below.
“The Right (i.e.: DOGE and Musk) is vacating all common sense. There’s little but pennies to be found in the places where DOGE is looking right now. Everyone who knows anything about anything knows the money is not in discretionary spending parts of the budget, in defense or interest on the debt. You can’t do anything about interest on the debt except by retiring it and not issuing more debt, but let them hack defense spending, and cut entitlement programs. That’s where the money really is. But of course, Social Security, Medicare and defense are off limits.”
So my friend’s logic (and the Democrats and leftist logic) is that the buckets that make up large parts of our federal government spending are difficult to control and that the rest of what the government spends money on is just “pennies” so therefore we should not bother to worry about government waste, fraud, and efficiency.Show More

Should The U S Shut Down The Postal Service

Should we still have a United States Postal Service (USPS) and if so, what should its role be? Why ask these questions? Because once again we are seeing in the …news differing opinions on the USPS. On the right, we are seeing politicians and pundits suggesting the USPS should be abolished, or its business model significantly changed. On the left, politicians and pundits are suggesting that the USPS is vital to national interests and should not be touched. Which opinion is correct?
Before considering if the USPS should be changed, eliminated, or kept we need to understand what the USPS is and what it does. The official definition of the USPS on Wikipedia states the following:
“The United States Postal Service (USPS), also known as the Post Office, U.S. Mail, or simply the Postal Service, is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for providing postal service in the United States, its insular areas and associated states. It is one of a few government agencies explicitly authorized by the Constitution of the United States. As of 2023, the USPS has 525,469 career employees and 114,623 non-career employees.Show More

“Jason Edward Hickel (born 1982) is an anthropologist …and professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Hickel’s research and writing focuses on economic anthropology and development, and is particularly opposed to capitalism, neocolonialism, as well as economic growth as a measure of human development. A critic of capitalism, he argues that degrowth is the solution to human impact on the environment.”
In his new Instagram post, Hickel states: “People often claim that capitalism performed better than socialism in terms of poverty and human development in the 20th century. This story is repeated so often that no one ever even bothers to back it up. Is it true?”

Lowe's Versus The Home Depot – Lowe's Wins

Early in 2024 I decided to remodel my house, including adding a second story. Colleagues and friends said I was crazy. Working with contractors is a nightmare and there are …so many things that can go wrong. Well, some things did go wrong. Working with some of the trades was challenging. The architect I hired was a disaster. And oddly enough, I very much enjoyed the journey. I learned so much and I know if I had it to do over again, I would do a much better job. But this article is not about my construction project, but about how I paid for it. At least, how I paid for some of it.
I had saved up much of the money for the project, I liquidated some investments, and I took out a small loan. However, I knew that I would have to be purchasing lots of materials from building stores, so I applied for credit at The Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Floor & Décor. Part of the reason I wanted credit cards from these building material retailers is that they all offer special payment terms. In many cases they offer no interest or financing for up to two years, and in some cases low interest rates for payments up to five years. Of course, each company has their own plans and methods of enticing customers to make purchases from their locations. Plus, I am a finance and accounting guy, and the idea of no interest and low interest very much appealed to me.
The good news is that all three retailers gave me a credit card. The Home Depot card had a limit of $4,000, the Floor & Décor card has a limit of $10,000 and the Lowe’s card had a limit of $9,800.Show More

What I Did When I Discovered my CEO Committing Fraud

In late 1990 I was hired as the chief financial officer of a small publicly traded company engaged in selling specialty gift products. It was an indication that the American …business world had accepted me, a recent immigrant the United States. I quickly settled into the job and looked forward to helping build this small public company into a consumer products powerhouse.
Shortly after I joined the firm, I met a guy in the sales department. His name was Stephan. One day Stephan came into my office, closed the door, and said he would like to speak with me. I said sure. He then told me he was convinced the chief executive officer and the president of the company were stealing money. Stephan said that he was a sales guy and didn’t know how to prove it, but he was sure that I, a finance and accounting guy, could figure it out. Even though this company was small, it did have both a CEO and a president, and the two of them were in effect the management team behind the company.
I was skeptical. The company was publicly traded and audited. Surely if there was anything out of the ordinary, the audit would have caught it. However, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a look. At that time banks would send a business their cancelled checks (checks that had been cashed) and most companies would keep those cancelled checks for reference. I started by pulling out a stack of cancelled checks from some period prior to me joining the firm and started to go through them. It didn’t take me long to find a few checks that looked suspicious. There was a series of checks made out to “cash.” It is unusual for business checks to be made out to cash. I discovered that these checks were being coded into the books as payments to supplier invoices (fake invoices as it turned out) and that the president was taking these checks to the bank and getting cashier’s checks made out to pay for everything from a new car for his daughter to payments against his mortgage.Show More

Spectrum is the brand name used by Charter Communications to market internet and cable services in many places across the United States. According to Wikipedia, Charter Communications is described as …follows:
“With over thirty-two million customers in forty-one states as of 2022, it is the largest cable operator in the United States by subscribers, just ahead of Comcast, and the largest pay TV operator ahead of Comcast and AT&T. Something missing from Wikipedia’s description of the company is its terrible customer service.

Yes, Some Cultures are Better Than Others
On a recent trip to Costa Rica, I stayed at the Tangeri Hotel in Jaco …
On a recent trip to Costa Rica, I stayed at the Tangeri Hotel in Jaco Beach. This hotel is a beachfront hotel in a great location. My experience at the …hotel was not the best. The internet service in my room was terrible, I could not get hot water from the sink in my room for two days, and service in the restaurant was mediocre (even though there were few customers). Breakfast was included and one of the menu items featured something that came with sour cream. However, when I asked for sour cream with my omelet, the server charged me an additional $3.50. Further the friend traveling with me told me he had been told when he checked in that no guests were allowed on the property. I wanted to have a real estate agent meet with me, so I checked with a lady at the front desk. Sure enough, she confirmed that no guests were allowed on the property in no uncertain terms.
This incident reminded me of another time I stayed in another hotel in Costa Rica. I was staying in a beach front hotel, and I had some issues with my room. The sheets on the bed were the wrong size for the bed, and every time I got in bed, within minutes the sheets would come off and would be lying on the mattress cover. I took my complaint to the front desk. Nothing was done. I complained again. Still nothing done. I complained to the housekeeper. Still no action. Finally, I went to the front desk again. A new manager was on duty. I explained the problem to him. Right away he contacted housekeeping and then he came up and supervised while the housekeeper found the right sized sheets and made the bed.
Over the course of a couple of days I watched this young man, and he seemed super-efficient, organized, and effective, compared to his counter parts. I bumped into him in the restaurant getting coffee and I asked him if he was the owner. He laughed and shook his head. So, I said, “Well, maybe one day you can buy your own hotel, you certainly are a great manager.” He told me that would never be possible. You see all the hotels were owned by a small group of rich people, most of whom owned the land for generations. He explained that none of them would ever sell to him, and if on the off chance he did find someone to sell to him, no bank would ever finance the transaction, and no investors would ever put money up to help him get started.Show More

Is Bank of America Collecting My Phone Contacts for the US Government

A friend owed me a few dollars from when we went on a ski trip together. He explained he was not too savvy with funds transfer systems, but he asked …that I send him a Zelle request, and he would pay me the money. That sounded like a very simple solution.
I logged onto my Bank of America account which I use for my Zelle payments and went to the Zelle section of my account. Although I have received several requests for Zelle payments from other people, I could not find any place to make a Zelle request. I spent about 30 minutes going through the Help information on the Bank of America website looking for a solution. Despite searching for such words strings such as “How to send a Zelle request?”, “Can’t find Zelle request button”, “Zelle request feature not available”, and “Can I make a Zelle request?” nothing came up in the Help section that explained why I could not make a Zelle request.
Frustrated, I called the Bank of America customer service number. I was on hold for about twenty minutes, listening to a recording tell me I should “Visit our website for help and answers to your questions.” I am not sure why big companies like Bank of America don’t get it. Customers have been banking online for about twenty-five years now. By the year 2000, 80% of banks offered online banking. In twenty-five years of online banking (and other services we access over the Internet) we know that we can check the company’s website for help. However, the reason we are calling is because we couldn’t find the information we need online because many Help features are not designed very well (apparently including Bank of America’s Help). I am hoping with AI we will see an improvement in customer service Help features.Show More

Do Increases in Minimum Wages Result in Higher Prices

In August 2024 Governor Gavin Newsom of California touted on California’s website that the increase in minimum wages to $20 an hour for fast food workers did not result, as …some predicted, in a decrease in jobs. In fact, statistics showed that total employment in the fast-food industry increased.
I wrote an article pointing out that the statistics quoted by Newsom do not differentiate between existing fast-food outlets and new fast-food outlets. Why is that important? It is important because any fast-food outlet that has been opened since the legislation passed, was already planned prior to that legislation passing. Major fast-food companies can take three to five years to open a new location and once the company has entered into a ground lease, building lease, and/or construction contract to build or open a new fast-food location, the company can’t simply renege and cancel those contracts midstream. I also spent considerable time searching the State of California’s website to find the information on employment at existing locations versus new locations, but I was not able to find it. I wonder if that information was intentionally omitted, or if they simply did not bother to collect that information.
Now a study by Michael Reich and his colleagues are not only echoing the claims of Governor Newsom but go even further to claim that the increases in wages were not all passed on to customers, but a significant portion were absorbed by the “high” profit margins of the restaurants. The study says “…about 62 percent of the law’s higher labor costs were shifted to customer meal prices. That, it states, suggests “that restaurant profit margins ….absorbed a substantial share of the cost increase.” The study is being widely quoted in the main-stream media as proof that increasing minimum wages does not directly translate to increases in prices at the cash register. In other words, we can force business operators to pay their employees more, but those clueless business operators will just sacrifice their profits rather than increase prices.Show More

Notice that I differentiate between the two because anyone who has ever studied the tax code knows that it is anything but logical.
So let us look at capital gains. What are they? Investopedia.com provides the following answer: “A capital gain refers to the increase in the value of a capital asset when it is sold. It occurs when you sell an asset for more than what you originally paid for it. Almost any type of asset you own is a capital asset. This can include a type of investment (like a stock, bond, or real estate) or something purchased for personal use (like furniture or a boat). Capital gains are realized when you sell a capital asset by subtracting the original purchase price from the sale price.”Show More
